4 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting an Event Design Business

Starting an event design business is exciting, challenging, and rewarding, but it’s not without its lessons. If I could go back to the beginning of my journey with ROC Events, here are four things I wish I had known:

1. Your Creativity Has Limits Without Systems

Creativity might fuel your passion, but it doesn’t keep your business running smoothly. Without proper systems, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed. I learned the importance of having workflows for client onboarding, pricing, contracts, and communication. Tools like project management software and client relationship systems are lifesavers. Trust me, the more organized you are, the more time you’ll have to actually create.

2. Every Client Won’t Be Your Dream Client

I used to think every client inquiry was a win—until I worked with a few who didn’t align with my vision or values. It’s so important to define your ideal client. The right clients understand and respect your creative process and are willing to invest in your work. Saying "no" to the wrong opportunities makes room for the ones that truly light you up.

3. Expenses Add Up Faster Than You Think

In the beginning, I underestimated the hidden costs of running an event design business. Beyond materials and décor, there are expenses like storage rentals, staff salaries, delivery trucks, marketing, and even insurance. Pricing your services to reflect not just your time but also these costs is essential to profitability. Always leave room in your budget for unexpected expenses—because they will come!

4. Self-Care is a Business Strategy

Working back-to-back events, staying up late designing, and juggling client calls can quickly lead to burnout. I’ve learned that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Whether it’s scheduling a massage, taking a day off, or delegating tasks to your team, prioritizing your well-being ensures you can show up as your best self for your clients and your business.

If you're dreaming of starting your own event design business, I hope these insights help you navigate the journey with a little more clarity and confidence.
